On their speeders, the group whips through the trees and undergrowth. There is not much of a path, but Del knows where she is going.

Del says over the helmet speaker, “Everyone stay alert. This terrain is rough.”

For several hours they wind their way through the forest, passing the tree line and cresting the ridge of the mountain. Looking down from the mountain they can see Indra in the distance, the dome an off-white, opaque semicircle reaching high into the sky. The flat land between the bottom of the mountain and the edge of the dome has four distinct areas. They can see the barren area of the flatlands that starts at the base of the mountains and stretches until it meets a bright band that looks almost white with light, beyond that is an area that looks uneven and discolored, and finally, closest to the dome, a ring that glows a dark yellow.

“Take a good look,” says Del. “That’s what we have to ride through.”

“What are we looking at?” asks Livia.

As they ride down the mountain, Enzo explains, “The first area is the flatlands. Almost nothing grows there. It will take about an hour to ride through. Then the bright ring, those are the solar panels that supply power to Indra. We stole panels from that field and built our own solar plant. It is our main source of electricity for the colony. That was a Jules project. Then there are debris fields, the dumping ground outside Indra. Everything they don’t need anymore gets loaded onto a refuse hauler and taken out of the city. The area closest to the dome is the irradiated zone. It is deadly.”

Lex asks, “How do we get through, then?”

“Lucky for us, the unmanned refuse haulers go underground and pass below the irradiated perimeter,” answers Del. “The PCF patrols use the same underground access to get out of the dome.”

When they reach the base of the mountain, they ride out into the flatlands, dust kicking up behind their speeders. In the distance, the horizon is a line of bright light.

As they get close to the light, Del’s voice comes in through the helmet. “We’re entering the solar collection area. Switch your visor shields to 80 percent.”

It takes almost an hour to ride through the huge sea of glaring solar panels. Once through the solar facility, they enter an endless wasteland of scraps and junk, passing rusted transporters, speeders, and patrollers. They weave around huge piles of plexi and giant sheets of metal discards from the constant maintenance and rebuilding of Indra. They pass mountains of furniture from the fine estates of the Islands, abandoned after they have served their purpose or fallen out of the ever-changing fashion, some of it unrecognizable as it disintegrates.

Livia looks at the piles of debris all around her. I never thought about where the trash from Indra was going. Some was being pushed into Rock Bottom, but look at all of this. Such waste.

Del says over the helmet speaker, “That’s far enough on the speeders.
